Spray Drone Acre Economics Against a Ground Rig

Farmers weighing the allure of agricultural drone sprays, which promise precise chemical application and terrain access, might be surprised that the pioneering technology does not automatically undercut conventional spraying out of the gate. In most regions, broadcast spraying by tractor-run booms and legacy crop-dusting planes still compete on price for the now-ubiquitous drone sprayer.
The University of Missouri Extension pegged the fresh cost of farm-driven drone spraying at $12.27 per acre, with for farmers. Hire it out, and the tooth of custom rates bites at $7.39 per acre, though custom hire rates for drone spray applications are typically around $16 per acre.
Iowa State University custom-rate coverage reported in 2026. There, drones averaged $12.50 per acre, with a price floor of $8 and a ceiling of $16. The median put the average at a cheaper $12 per acre.
The Ohio State survey cited in 2026 reported drone-applied chemicals averaging $14.98 per acre, for a slight premium over aerial application at $14.84 per acre.
That rosy aerial comparison, though, is suspect. Farm Progress found more spread between the two. The undercarriage tractor work, in its 2024 analysis, priced broadcast spraying by self-propelled rigs on tall crops at $8.35 per acre, but let the tarmac-creeping spraying by tractor hit the $7 mark. With trade winds at its back, though, aerial application averaged a figure in the middle: $10.70 per acre. But the praise for aerial application comes with a caveat. Farm Progress quoted commercial drone applicators as charging between $11 and $14 per acre, charging between $11 and $14 per acre.
But to some, the price contest looks one-sided in the drone's favor — on paper. Operating your own drone may only cost $1 per acre, but requires upfront investment. Underscoring that figure, though, requires plotting through cost centers like splurging on a base, booking a trailer to tote the base, springing for hardware to generously charge the drone-propelling batteries, and a backwater mixer to whip up rinses and concentrate the application.
Stacking all the operational options on a calculator, though, delivers a few conclusions. Farms with their own drone fleets and a field full of flush cash might hit the $1 per acre for operating, after the arithmetic. But custom operators typically charge around $11 to $14 per acre.
Upping the stakes and letting loose the research drone returns a mixed report: in some cases, drone spraying still competes with crop duster fungicide packing. But in many others, it stays neck and neck or even falls short of the averaging $7-8 per acre of high-volume towed or self-propelled broadcast systems.
More research is needed to understand the variables that tip the drone and tractor rivalry either way. But with a comparative analysis in hand, growers can begin making the decision themselves.
