For the third year, the commercial drone industry is gathering this week at the Drone World Expo in San Jose, Calif., for educational sessions, demonstrations, exhibits and workshops.
Taking place at the San Jose Convention Center, the show is holding pre-conference workshops today and the trade show and conference on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We are thrilled to be back in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley, and gather thousands of commercial drone users to hear from over 125 speakers and see the latest technology on display and in action,” says Joelle Coretti, vice president and event director.
The three pre-conference workshops are as follows: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide is presenting sUAS for Inspections; AMA, DJI and Fly-Robotics are holding a Public Safety Training Workshop; and MicaSense is hosting Sensors and Analytics for Precision Agriculture.
On Tuesday morning, speakers from Facebook, NASA, Airbus, Project Wing and GE Beyond will deliver “Views from Above: Policy Evolution and Bold Predictions for the Future of Commercial UAS.” In the afternoon, Michael Kratsios, deputy assistant to the president and deputy U.S. chief technology officer, will discuss U.S. technology priorities and strategic initiatives.
Wednesday’s keynote session is “From Packages to Passengers: How Drones are Transforming Transportation” with speakers from UPS, Aurora Flight Systems, NASA, Uber Elevate and Ford Motor Co.
These sessions will be moderated by Hogan Lovells’ Gretchen West, co-executive director of the Commercial Drone Alliance.
Other notable events during the expo include live drone demonstrations, “tech talk” presentations in the exhibit hall, press conferences and networking events. On Thursday, there will also be a “Professional Drone Demo Day,” featuring live demos of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) technology at La Selva Beach (requiring separate registration).
Networking events include Women of Commercial Drones Roundtables and networking receptions held both nights of the show in the exhibit hall. AIAA will also be presenting the winners of the IDEA Competition, encouraging new ideas that connect the UAS-related R&D and end-user communities.
