According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, some fans spotted the hovering UAV as early as the fifth inning, but officials called on police officers in the eighth inning to locate the operator outside the stadium, who then followed orders to take it down.
The drone reportedly created a lot of buzz from the fans, even prompting children to believe there was a “UFO” at the game. A fan told the Gazette that although many people were talking about it, they ended up being more interested in the ballgame.
CBS Pittsburgh says the Pirates organization released the following statement: “During [the June 26th] game, a man standing on the River Walk flew his small, personal drone over the ballpark. Our security staff quickly identified the operator and alerted on-site Pittsburgh Police officers. The officers immediately addressed the issue by ordering the man to stop the use of the drone. The man was informed of the seriousness of the situation and warned that if he returned, he would face further police action.”
