Research Institute Aims to Use UAVs for Road Assessments

The Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI) is investigating ways to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to map roads, identify potholes and understand traffic.

One project, dubbed Unpaved Roads, ‘aims to help departments of transportation across the country assess and predict repairs needed on unpaved roads more quickly and cheaply,’ according to an article by Government Technology.

Under the Unpaved Roads project, researchers at MTRI are studying ‘UAVs of varying size and cost.’ The project is anticipated to be complete this year.
