College students enrolled in a course to learn how to fly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been told to stay indoors.

Although the University of Missouri offers a one-credit journalism class on UAV operations, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sent the school a cease-and-desist letter last summer, grounding any outdoor flights, according to an article by the Associated Press.

Bill Allen, a professor of agricultural journalism, says interest in employing drones for research has swelled within the university's science community, especially in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

The 17 students in Allen's UAV course major in topics ranging from business and agriculture science to life sciences and education.
