DJI and Bentley Partner to Boost UAV-Captured Imagery for Infrastructure

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) company DJI has announced a collaboration with Bentley Systems in which the two will develop hardware and software solutions for collecting drone imagery on infrastructure projects.

Bentley, whose global headquarters are in Pennsylvania, provides architects, engineers, geospatial professionals, constructors and owner-operators with comprehensive software solutions for advancing the design, construction and operations of infrastructure.

The companies will offer packaged solutions that include DJI imaging platforms and technology from Bentley’s ContextCapture, a reality modeling software package that uses 2D photographs and laser scans to create 3D models.

“This collaboration builds on our companies’ respective strengths, creating tremendous synergies,” says Paul Xu, DJI’s vice president. “By integrating Bentley’s ContextCapture with our imaging products, we are providing the tools to improve work efficiencies in the design, construction and operation of infrastructure assets and enabling our users to realize the full benefits of the stability, flexibility and maneuverability of DJI’s aerial platforms.”

Using ContextCapture on DJI aerial and handheld devices, users can quickly produce 3D models of existing conditions of infrastructure projects. The highly detailed 3D reality meshes provide precise, real-world context for design, construction and operations decisions throughout a project’s life cycle, according to the companies. In addition, the imagery can be accessed and shared in any CAD, BIM or GIS workflow.

DJI will provide solutions using three versions of ContextCapture technology, corresponding to three levels of data capture and processing functionality. Pricing and availability will be announced in early 2017.

“Our work with DJI further advances infrastructure projects through the use of UAVs for the continuous capture of infrastructure assets’ as-operated conditions for processing into engineering-ready reality meshes,” comments Francois Valois, senior director of reality modeling for Bentley Systems. “Combining the powerful 3D photogrammetry capabilities of ContextCapture with DJI’s UAV and imaging products delivers a powerful new capability to infrastructure professionals globally.”
