Chicago Park District Deploys Drones for Shoreline Study

As a first step in evaluating erosion caused by this year’s high lake levels, the Chicago Park District has begun using drones to capture footage of the Chicago shoreline.

The drones are being flown along the city’s shoreline by a professional contractor through mid-September.

The Chicago Park District is working with the City of Chicago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and city aldermen to develop a shoreline study for the entire 18-mile stretch of Chicago’s lakefront.

The study is designed to help identify near- and long-term sustainable strategies to address erosion and storm damage.
