Amazon is apparently making progress on the company's plans to deliver packages via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
In early December 2013, Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, created quite a stir when he appeared on 60 Minutes and revealed the drone delivery initiative. Now, in his annual letter to company shareholders, Bezos makes a cursory reference to the UAV plans.
He writes in the letter that ‘the Prime Air team is already flight testing our 5th and 6th generation aerial vehicles, and we are in the design phase on generations 7 and 8.’
It then seems that Amazon is in serious preparations for a UAV delivery service. And Bezos has a bit of competition for headlines. A San Francisco start-up hopes to deliver drugstore items by drone this year, and a UAV has already dropped off government documents in Dubai.
