Alabama Fire Rescue Team Puts UAV to the Test

First responders in Northport, Ala., have officially begun using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to assess emergency situations.

According to a Fox 6 WBRC report, the Northport Fire Rescue flew a UAV over a tanker-truck fire on Oct. 17 to assess the accident (the aerial footage of which has been released here).

The rescuers had been deploying the $2,500 aircraft in training for months, but this was the first time it was put to the test in a real-life situation, the report says.

The Northport Fire chief told the news agency that the team is using the UAV in accordance with FAA safety guidelines but that the process of getting agency approval “takes a little bit of time.”
