UAV Films Civil War Reenactment

In an application that seems a bit anachronistic, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been used to film a reenactment of a Civil War battle.

For the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Mansfield in DeSoto Parish, La., two DJI Phantom drones were deployed to capture the reenactment, according to an article by the Shreveport Times. The confrontation was the last major victory for Confederate forces during the Civil War.

Author and historian Mike Sledge, the operator of the UAVs, took care to not interfere with the action. He flew the aircraft high enough that the reenactors could not see the UAVs and, for safety purposes, did not allow the drones to hover over people.

Spectators were fascinated that drones could be employed in such a way.
