UAV Captures Scenes of Every New York City Borough

A photographer has taken his unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) around all five boroughs of New York City to create what he calls the ‘ultimate aerial video’ of the city that never sleeps.

Sky Tech One‘s Victor Chu, also the filmmaker and editor, took his DJI Phantom 2 – equipped with a GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition – over land and water in Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. In the video’s description, he notes that he wanted to cover areas besides just Manhattan and Brooklyn, the city's more commonly filmed and photographed places.

In a behind-the-scenes video, Chu documents parts of the journey, including nearly accidentally sinking his aircraft into water and trekking through cold marshes. He explains in the description that all shots were taken using prop guards and that “safety was practiced as much as possible.” To practice flying inside Queens’ Unisphere, he can be seen doing trial runs through an obstacle with a similarly shaped structure.

The video – featuring bird’s-eye views of landmarks ranging from Yankee Stadium to Coney Island roller coasters to Chinatown – can be seen here.
