South Dakota firefighters are planning to start operating an unmanned aerial system (UAS) to assist during emergencies.

According to an Associated Press report, the Brookings Fire Department was gifted the GoPro-equipped quadcopter from a local QC technician, who constructed the aircraft himself.

Potential uses for the UAS include operations such as search-and-rescue, fire monitoring or spotting objects submerged in water.

The report says the crew plans to start flying the aircraft in the spring after having put more firefighters through operational training.
