Citing performance issues reported by a small number of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) registrants, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is in the process of performing site maintenance and temporarily suspending the Web-based registration service during overnight hours.

The FAA says an overwhelming number of people have successfully registered since the site went live on Dec. 21 – specifically, as of Dec. 22, the agency says 45,000 have completed the process.

However, due to some reported issues, FAA has asked the site contractor, CSRA, to address them and complete other maintenance in advance of the holidays, when, according to industry estimates, as many as 400,000 small UAS could be sold, the FAA explains.

The site was taken offline on Tuesday night and will be taken offline tonight at 9 p.m. EST. Following last night’s maintenance, the agency resumed service this morning and expects to do the same for tomorrow.
