SPAR Point Group, the organizer of the Commercial UAV Expo, has released a report providing insights into how unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology is being implemented to improve efficiency, production and safety in construction projects.
The report, entitled “Progressive Construction Firms Mobilize to Put UAVs to Work,” comes as a result of increased demand from the construction industry for more information on implementing drone technology in projects, says SPAR Point Group.
In advance of the Commercial UAV Expo, which will take place Oct. 5-7 in Las Vegas, the report delves into how firms including AECOM, Barrick Gold and DPR Construction are using UAV technology, where they are finding the greatest benefits from it and how the value of these data-gathering solutions will grow in the near future.
Jon Amdur, vice president of AECOM and program manager for its commercial UAV program; Iain Allen, Barrick Gold’s senior manager of GIS; and Scott Widman, project manager at DPR, were interviewed for the report.
Amdur and Allen are also on the Commercial UAV Expo advisory board and will be chairing sessions at the event. Widman will be speaking in two sessions at the show – “Reality Capture in Construction – Drone Data” and “Insurance Considerations.”
“UAVs for construction are a pretty wild ride right now. I believe what we do today is different than what we’ll do in five years,” Amdur says in the report.
Allen adds, “The whole field is changing. We really have no idea about how we’ll be using UAVs in five years, but we expect it to be very different.”
