The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has acquired from the Seattle Police Department two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for possible future use.

According to a report on the Los Angeles Times, the Draganflyer X6 vehicles, which can take photos and video and have infrared night vision, would be able to enter certain locations and give officers a view of the scene before they go in.

The LAPD makes it clear that the UAVs would be used only for publicly known purposes, not for surveillance, the report says.

The New York Police Department is currently looking into the use of UAVs to detect crime and enhance public safety.
