The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has obtained a Certificate of Authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to test unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

With a goal of locating mosquito-breeding areas, the District will conduct test flights of two DJI Phantom 2+ UAVs in rural, non-easily accessible locations in the Florida Keys, according to a report from KeysInfosNet.

The aircraft will keep clear of residential areas and airports and will not go above 400 feet in altitude. The District is also considering potential UAV uses beyond surveying land, such as pesticide distribution.
