CDM Smith Inc., a full-service engineering and construction firm headquartered in Boston, has been granted an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to the Section 333 exemption, the firm is authorized to use the DJI Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter for “aerial acquisitions.” CDM Smith provides solutions in water, environment, transportation, energy and facilities to public and private clients worldwide.

“We can now use drone aerial photography during environmental assessments to help us quickly identify areas that warrant immediate surface inspection,” says Dave Neitz, chief technical officer. “For natural disasters, the real-time availability of drone aerial images could help us prioritize response efforts and identify at-risk structures.

“And on large-scale construction sites, we can augment our fixed cameras and field inspectors with mobile surveillance to provide more comprehensive inspection information,’ he explains.
