An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is being flown in Italy to explore the underground town of Cerreto Vecchia.

Through a sponsorship from the country's Ministry of Education, archaeologists are using LiDAR to first map out the town, which has been buried for over 400 years following an earthquake, according to The History Blog.

The mapping will kick off an initiative of “exploring the terrain, history and traditions of the town,” which also includes digging for artifacts, the report says. The combination of the UAV mapping and the discovered artifacts will allow the archaeologists to construct a 3D model of what they believe the town was like.

The full report can be found here.
